Fall Lawn Care Tips for a Lush Spring Yard
It’s that time of year again. The leaves are changing, the temperatures are dropping, and lawn care has become a necessity. Keep your lawn looking its best and help it get through the winter with these key fall lawn care tips.
Aeration and Seeding
One of the most important steps you can take to create a healthy, lush yard for next spring is aeration and seeding. Aeration allows for deeper water penetration, looser soil conditions, and more root growth. Start by aerating your lawn one or two weeks before you seed. Then spread a thin layer of seed by hand or with a spreader. The new seed should be watered in frequently to help it establish itself.
Mowing
As summer transitions to fall, cut your grass short and then raise the mower for the cooler months. As temperatures drop, cooler-season grasses will grow taller. Don’t forget to leave the clippings on the lawn to help keep your soil temperature even.
Fertilizing
Fertilizing in the fall can help your lawn prepare for the colder weather. As the temperature drops and the grass becomes dormant, the fertilizer will help keep the soil healthy throughout the winter months.
Weed Control
Spend some time getting rid of weeds in the fall. Apply pre-emergent herbicide to reduce the spread and growth of weeds in the spring. If there are large patches of weeds, you may need to apply post-emergent herbicide. But be sure to read the directions carefully, as some herbicides may affect your grass, too.
Fall Cleanup
Cleaning up in the fall can help avoid turf diseases and promote healthier grass next spring. Rake up as many leaves as possible and dispose of them, or add them to your compost pile. If you leave the leaves on your lawn, they can suffocate the grass and block out sunlight.
